We are located across the street from the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University Medical Center.
The Palo Alto Endoscopic Center is not Medicare certified so Dr. Shields does all procedures on Medicare patients at Stanford Hospital and some at El Camino Hospital. But Dr. Shields primarily admits his patients to Standford Hosptial.

Welcome - What To Expect

Thank you for choosing the Palo Alto Endoscopy Center. We are located at Suite 380 at 770 Welch Road in Palo Alto. Please park behind the building in the spaces designated for visitors.

  • Arrive at the Endoscopy Center 1 / 2 hour before your scheduled appointment.
  • Please check in with the reception window and PUSH the blue button just to the right of the reception window.
  • Please have a seat and someone from the Endoscopy staff will be right with you.
  • You will be taken to a patient room where you will be asked to read and sign consent, post procedure instructions, and a financial disclosure.
  • You will then be asked to change into a patient gown, and a nurse will take a brief health history.
  • The procedure itself will be done in our procedure room.
  • Then we will help you walk to a recovery room where your ride home can join you.

If your ride home is not staying in the lobby while you have your procedure, he/she should return 1 / 2 hour of your scheduled time of the procedure. Your ride will need to come up to the Endoscopy Center to pick you up. Ask that he/she push the blue button to the right of the reception window to alert the Endoscopy Center staff that someone is in the lobby. YOU MUST HAVE A RIDE HOME.

Once again, thank you for choosing the Palo Alto Endoscopy Center. We hope we can make this important procedure as pleasant as possible.

After the Surgery

Following the surgery, you will be escorted to a recovery room. A nurse will continue to monitor you. Once you are sufficiently awake, you will be provided with clear liquids and if required, assisted to the bathroom. The doctor may come and talk to you about the results of the surgery but you may not remember that conversation due to the sedation that you have received. With your permission, the doctor may speak with a family member who accompanied you. You will be given verbal and written instructions to follow after you leave the center.

It is common after a surgery to experience nausea and sleepiness, as well as abdominal bloating, cramps, mild pain, minimal rectal bleeding and rectal irritation (after a colonoscopy) or sore throat (after an upper endoscopy). You should go home directly from the center and plan to rest until the following morning. Follow your doctor’s instructions about eating and drinking fluids.

If you experience severe abdominal pain, continuous heavy bleeding, fever, chills, or uncontrolled vomiting, please contact your private physician immediately. In the event of a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Financial Arrangements

You will receive up to three separate bills for the care you receive through our center. One is for our facility fee, which is competitive with that of other local facilities. It covers the surgery, sedation, and nursing care you receive during the surgery and in the recovery room. The second bill is for the physician’s professional services, and the third bill will be for pathology services, if required.

We will contact your insurance provider to obtain pre-authorization for your surgery. All charges are due and payable within 60 days following your surgery. To make it easier to pay your insurance deductible or co-payment, our facility accepts Visa and MasterCard in addition to other forms of payment.
